In Search of the Perfect Christmas Tree

Andrew and I convinced our friends Jo and Eric to go cut down a Christmas tree in true Edlund fashion, by hiking into the woods and spending an hour trying to find the "perfect tree". (Although by Edlund standards, waiting two weeks before Christmas to get a Christmas tree is cutting it a little too close for comfort.) Jackson the pup, had an adventure too. As you will see he got a little bit distracted from the quest for the perfect tree.

Rocking out to Christmas music on the drive out to Mackenzie pass, helped to get us into the Christmas spirit. December in Bend has been on average 50-60 degrees, so it was easy to forget just how close to Christmas it really was. After a 35 minute ride we all climbed out of the car to look for our trees.

We had to get a $5 permit to cut down the tree in the national forest. On the permit there were many rules. Such as: The tree has to be at least 200 feet from the road; the stump left behind has to be 12" or less; another tree has to be at least 15' away from the tree that is cut down. What seemed like a daunting task, acutally turned out to be very easy. If you never been in an Oregon Forest: there are a lot of trees in Oregon.

Of course when you are hunting for a tree in the forest, it is east to go overboard, by looking for the tallest tree you can find. (Please see Eric's tree). It was quite the struggle to get both trees on the Suby.

Hiking South Sister

The snow is finally gone, and we finally made for the summit of South Sister. At 10,000+ feet tall the hike was a grueling 6 miles UP, and a slippery 6 mile descent DOWN.

I am still shaking the pumice rock out of my shoes.

Needless to say it was all worth it because the views were AMAZING.

Last picture-> ice bath for our legs in Devil's lake.

Surfing at the Oregon Coast

Andrew and I went to the Oregon Coast this weekend with Jenny and Aaron to try our hand at surfing. We had gorgeous warm sunny weather and 5 ft waves, which were perfect learning waves in my opinion! We spent Saturday at Oswald State Park. Andrew and I both had good luck getting out past the breaking waves and being able to stand up right away! After the morning session was over we went to Cannon Beach for lunch, salt water taffy and a nap on the beach. Two Pictures of Cannon Beach and Haystack rock:

After our Nap, we met back up with Jenny and Aaron because the guys wanted to squeeze in another hour of surfing. While the boys were surfing, Jenny and I made a campfire on Indian Beach. I'm kind of glad I didn't go out there again because Aaron said he had a seal get close to him and check him out. I don't know how I would have handled that in the twilight!

The Next Day we were up again bright an early to get another day of surfing in. We headed straight for Indian beach. I was able to capture some video of the boys surfing in the early morning waves.

Being a home owner is hard work.

This past weekend was truly full of labor. Andrew and I have been working around the clock to get our new house put together, and keep up with yard work. Nevertheless - Here are some much awaited pictures of our new place.

Who ever thought our first big purchase for our new place would be a lawn mower? We may have been a little too enthusiastic about our new yard. In addition to the roses and mums, I made the mistake of buying 3 bags of bulbs (tulips, Iris, and daffodils) from Costco. I dug 6 inch holes on every square surface of what could accommodate flowers, but after hours of planting I ran out of room on our property. And I still have 60 ++ bulbs to plant. Come Spring the deer are going to love me!

Two Sisters in Paris - Spring 2008

Here is a slideshow (click on the link) of a trip to Paris, Ashley and I took earlier this spring. We had a fantastic time. I think the highlight was the croque-monsieur sandwich.

Paris was a much bigger city than I imagined. We spent the first few nights in a smaller part of Paris called Montmatre. Then we moved to a younger part of Paris for the rest of our trip. The Seine is in many of my pictures, because it was so beautiful to walk along. Also are pictures of our trip to Versailles.

First Hike of 2008

Our first hike of the year without snow on the trail, August 2, 2008. Here are some pictures of Mount Bachelor and Broken Top, from the green lakes trail and soda creek trail. We ended up hiking (=trail running) 13-15 miles.

Biking in Central Oregon

Here are some pictures of a weekend bike ride Andrew and I did in early July. We went for a ride on Cascade Lakes Highway near Mt Bachelor (about 30 mi from Bend). With us our are friends Eric and Jo.

Andrew and I also tried to go for a hike that same day, but as you can see behind me there was still way too much snow. About 0.25 miles into our hike we lost the trail under 4 feet of snow.

October 2007 - New Zealand Boonemoon

Our Honeymoon was in New Zealand. Not many people would choose to spend 3 weeks traveling in a campervan. But we did, and it was worth it. Check out some of our pictures.

New Zealand is certainly a land of extremes. Some of the Highlights of our trip were:

Bungee jumping of the Nevis high wire gondola outside of Queenstown.

Hiking through the blue ice walls of the Franz Joseph Glacier.

Kayaking the remote coast near cathedral cove.
